UKGBC Engaging the supply chain

UKGBC – Engaging the supply chain

Aquvis was involved with the UKGBC initiative on how to engage with supply chains and the key findings are highlighted below.

Procurement decisions across the lifecycle of built assets are shaped by competing priorities. Time, cost, and quality have traditionally dominated. Today, the climate and biodiversity crises require organisations to give far greater weight to ethical, social, and environmental factors, including carbon impacts and embodied ecological impacts (EEI).

Built environment professionals have significant influence over supply chains that span long term strategic partners and project‑specific suppliers. How these networks operate and how early stakeholders engage directly shapes project outcomes.

Commercial Drivers for Engaging on Sustainability

  • Rising reporting requirements. Standards such as IFRS and the EU CSRD increasingly require organisations to collect and disclose supply‑chain environmental and social data.
  • Net‑zero commitments depend on suppliers. Many UK and global companies with SBTi‑aligned targets must reduce supply‑chain emissions to meet their goals.
  • Supply‑chain emissions dominate. These emissions often represent more than 70% of a business’s total carbon footprint.
  • Sustainable assets outperform. In the UK, energy‑efficient office, retail, and industrial assets consistently deliver stronger financial performance than inefficient ones.
